The Berwickshire High School

Mobile Phones Policy

  • Under normal circumstances, pupils are not allowed to bring mobile phones to school
  • Where there are special circumstances, and where parents have written to the Rector seeking permission, pupils are issued with a card (renewed each year – the colour for 2006-07 is yellow) allowing them to have a phone with them
  • Pupils may require to bring a phone to school on an ad hoc/one-off basis for a specific set of circumstances. When this happens, they must see the Rector at the start of the school day to explain the situation
  • For pupils carrying phones, there are restrictions as to use i.e.
    • phones may be used before/after school and at lunch times (but not intervals)
    • they must not be used within the school building
    • other than at the times specified, phones must be switched off and out of sight
  • Staff should confiscate phones
    • where pupils are thought to be using them or consulting them in some way
    • where the phone rings or emits some kind of audible signal
    • (in both cases the carrying of a card is irrelevant)
  • Staff should exercise their own judgement as to whether a phone has become ‘accidentally’ visible e.g. by slipping out of someone’s pocket (nevertheless, please check to see whether they have a card!)
  • Confiscated phones should be passed to the Rector with a note of the pupil’s name and (if appropriate) the circumstances involved. Confiscated phones may be left in the Rector’s box in the office or passed on direct
  • Under normal circumstances, confiscated phones will be retained until a letter is received from parents. Occasionally, however, a pupil may urgently require the phone for after school and in these cases it will not be retained; a letter of explanation will still be required from parents, nevertheless.
  • Phones with a video facility are now relatively commonplace. As a result, it is no longer possible or appropriate to uphold the earlier SBC ban on these devices. However, where a pupil has videoed a member of staff or a fellow pupil without his/her consent, the consequences for the perpetrator will be severe i.e. suspension and possible referral to the Police according to the precise circumstances.
