Philosophy - Our Department
Philosophy is taught in Senior School. The course seeks to instil transferable skills in critical reasoning and logical thinking. Consequently it benefits, and appeals to, students with all sorts of career paths in mind.
Higher Philosophy currently is taught with an Intermediate 2 option available for some candidates.
The course is open to any student with an interest in argument and a Credit/Int 2/Higher pass in English.
Units are as follows:
Critical Thinking, which develops reasoning skills
Metaphysics, which addresses questions nor answerable via ‘physical’ (scientific) study e.g. Is there a rational basis for belief in God? Do we have free will?
Epistemology, the focus of which is what, how and whether we can ‘know’ with certainty, and
Moral Philosophy, in which moral theories and their application to topical moral issues are investigated.
