Health & Wellbeing - Our Faculty
The Health and Wellbeing Faculty comprises the Home Economics and Physical Education Departments. As well as embracing the teaching and learning ethos of the school, both departments contribute to its status as a Health Promoting School.
The departments have jointly designed a lifestyle course for our S1 pupils. In Home Economics students keep a record of their nutritional intake for a week, while in Physical Education students are put through a range of health related fitness tests. The results are then discussed in Social Education and programmes are discussed to improve nutrition and exercise which are then carried out in the two departments. There are opportunities throughout the year for re-testing to gauge improvements.
For years S2 - S6 a range of courses are provided in the faculty; Core Access, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2 and Higher are offered.
The move to the new school in February 2009 has provided excellent state of the art facilities for the faculty:
The Home Economics department has two cookery rooms and a fabrics room. By October 2009 they will be fully ICT interactive. The department also has a spacious preparation room and a laundry.
The department is staffed by two teachers and a technician.
The Physical Education Department has a fitness suite, a fully ICT interactive classroom, six well appointed changing rooms with hairdryers, a gymnasium, and a four court games hall. Outside there is a full size floodlit all weather field, a 110m Tartan running track, three grass pitches and a tarred area with basketball and football goal combinations. The school has access to the local swimming pool in the old school grounds.
The department is staffed by 3.5 teachers and there is input from an active school co-ordinator on one day a week.
A range of extra curricular activities is provided by the department for all age groups.
